Classic Black and White Movies

Of WOMEN, OF COLOR

"A Raisin in the Sun" - 1961 Movie - Sidney Poiter,

Let's Watch this Classic Movies together.

Author and playwright Lorraine Hansberry was the first African-American woman to have a play performed on Broadway.

At age 29 she was the youngest playwright and the 5th woman to receive the Best Play of the Year by the New York Drama Critics Award.

At age 34, Lorraine Hansberry died after a long battle with cancer.

A Raisin in the Sun mirrored Hansberry's life in Chicago, IL. Her family moved into an All-White neighborhood and her father, who was a prominent real estate broker, fought a legal battle to abolish real estate covenants that prevented sales of property based on the buyer's race. The case went to the Supreme Court, Hansberry v. Lee , 311 U.S. 32 (1940) and the Hansberry family was victorious, but the family faced a lot of discrimination in their new neighborhood.

Any comments?
